First Wedding Photography Experience

So, let’s talk a bit about my first wedding photography experience which happend back in 2016.

I don’t remember the exact dates but I think somewhere from February to March I got a call from a friend saying that her cousin or friend (don’t remember) is getting married and that they need a photographer for the whole day and an extra photo session at the Ostrožac castle.

At first, I wasn’t so sure what to tell her because I never did something like that and then I realized, this may be an opportunity to start with wedding photography. So after a short talk, I agreed on doing photography and asked her for the groom’s number so I can contact him for further.

The price

Honestly, this was one of the hardest things to decide. Before the call with the groom, I was thinking about the price, how much should I charge? How much is too much? What if I charge too much and don’t do the job right?

I literally asked myself a ton of questions and I didn’t know the answer to any of them. So I Googled it, of course. I did a small research on Google what is the fair price for beginner wedding photographers and the prices were kinda too high for the standards in my country (Bosnia and Herzegovina). But after a short time, I found the price somewhere in the middle for the start.

I won’t hide the price, I did this wedding for 75€ (around $83). I know, I know, this may be a small amount to you, maybe even a big but hey, we are talking about the photographer who never shot a wedding before. The average price of wedding photography in Bosnia and Herzegovina starts around 200€ to 500€, some go up to 1000€. But I was looking at my skills and standards and came up with the 75€ which was okay for me and the client.

The wedding day

The wedding day came, I went to the groom’s place first. Luckily, I had a few friends there so I wasn’t alone which was really helpful for the first time. Everyone was very welcoming and nice to me. I literally photographed everything. Later on, we went to pick up a bride which was two hours away from where the groom was. I know, it is far away. We came there, again I photographed everything just like at the groom’s place, nothing that scary. Then we headed back to do the festive part, the wedding.

The photo session

Okay, so here is where I got very nervous. Why? Because it was my first time of course! And these special photos will be their biggest memory for the rest of their lives. Before the wedding, I downloaded myself a lot of wedding poses on my phone so I have examples of how to position a bride and groom. I started positioning them, taking pics and stuff while being very nervous. They were nice to me, smiling, happy, and so I relaxed, finally. I continued with the session which was that fun that I couldn’t wait for another one.

The rest of the day

After we finished the photo session, we headed to the restaurant where we spent the rest of the day. Nothing that special to shoot but to be honest, it was a lot of work. At late night, there was a gift-giving time and the cake.

So yes, that is pretty much how my first wedding photography experience was. In the beginning, I was very nervous but later on, things became amazing. And I am really glad that I accepted this offer because it opened me another door for my photography business.
